{"id":10,"date":"2014-06-09T19:12:35","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T17:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swarm-intelligence.it\/wordpress\/?p=10"},"modified":"2018-05-29T18:40:01","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T16:40:01","slug":"artificial-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swarm-intelligence.it\/wordpress\/artificial-intelligence\/","title":{"rendered":"Biomimicry: what we can learn from mother nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"padding-bottom:15px; padding-top:2px;\" class=\"hupso-share-buttons\"><!-- Hupso Share Buttons - https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/ --><a class=\"hupso_toolbar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/buttons\/dot.png\" style=\"border:0px; padding-top: 5px; float:left;\" alt=\"Share Button\"\/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">var hupso_services_t=new Array(\"Twitter\",\"Facebook\",\"Linkedin\");var hupso_background_t=\"#84FF5E\";var hupso_border_t=\"#FFE959\";var hupso_toolbar_size_t=\"medium\";var hupso_image_folder_url = \"\";var hupso_twitter_via=\"SwarmStrength\";var hupso_url_t=\"\";var hupso_title_t=\"Biomimicry%3A%20what%20we%20can%20learn%20from%20mother%20nature\";<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/js\/share_toolbar.js\"><\/script><!-- Hupso Share Buttons --><\/div><p lang=\"en-US\">Since ancient times men have always \u00a0imitated nature for their\u00a0artifacts,\u00a0Leonardo da Vinci<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0(1452\u20131519) was a keen observer of the anatomy and flight of birds, and made numerous notes and sketches on his observations as well as sketches of &#8220;flying machines&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">The Wright Brothers, and the first heavier-than-air aircraft in 1903, derived inspiration from observations of pigeons in flight.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"color: #252525;\">The term\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #252525;\">biomimicry<\/i><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0appeared as early as 1982\u00a0but\u00a0was popularized by scientist <a title=\"Janine Benyus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Janine_Benyus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Janine Benyus <\/a>in her 1997 book Biomimicry: &#8220;Innovation Inspired by Nature.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0Janine Benyus in her book says \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"color: #252525;\"><em>&#8220;With biomimicry we&#8217;re able to apply fresh thinking to traditional manufacturing, to\u00a0<\/em><em>undo the toxic and energy-intensive mistakes of the past&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><em>I wish\u00a0<\/em><em>we had been at the design table at the Industrial Revolution.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Suggesting to\u00a0look at Nature as a &#8220;Model, Measure, and Mentor&#8221; and emphasizes sustainability as an objective of biomimicry.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">In biological\u00a0systems, waste doesn&#8217;t exist\u00a0and\u00a0everything can be used by something\u00a0else. Instead of using large inputs of energy and toxic chemicals to make things and\u00a0ship them across the globe, nature makes what it needs where it needs it, with\u00a0water-based chemistry.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">These designs suggest some of what could be learned by applying the lessons of\u00a0biomimicry to the problem of air-conditioning in particular.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">One of the\u00a0most important\u00a0example of biomimicry in ventilation is inspired by termites. A few years ago, scientists observed that\u00a0big termite mounds in Africa stay remarkably cool inside, even in blistering heat.<br \/>\nThe insects accomplish that feat with a clever system of air pockets, which drive\u00a0natural ventilation through convection.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Inspired by this idea, Architect Mick Pearce and engineering firm Arup builded Eastgate Centre, a large office and shopping center in Zimbabwe that is cooled with the outside air. The system uses only 10 percent as much energy as conventional air-conditioning to drive fans that keep the air circulating.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Another example of biomimicry is guided by the\u00a0\u00a0Ducks and penguins behavior. These animals\u00a0\u00a0live in cold climates and \u00a0have an innovative adaptation that\u00a0helps them survive the elements. The veins and arteries in their feet have a\u00a0countercurrent configuration, which ends up warming the blood that is closer to the\u00a0animal&#8217;s core and cooling the blood at the edges of its extremities.
